In your post you are talking about rogue antispyware, or phony security software. The best way to avoid rogue antispyware is to always research software before you download anything off the internet. You should be very wary of any software that claims to be free, free usually comes loaded with spyware and other malware. Having a good quality antispyware/antivirus set in place with real time monitoring will stop rogue software from installing without your knowledge or consent. There are a number of websites that give detailed explanations of different variants of rogue antispyware, http://www.BleepingComputer.com, http://www.Spyware411.com and http://RogueAntispyware.blogspot.com to name a few.

You are right, there is no way a website can tell if your computer is infected with malware, the only way is to have software installed and then run a scan. Online virus scanners are a complete SCAM!!
