Free Online Virus Scan Review
Need to scan, but don’t want to install antivirus software
This is a perfect solution for those who don’t like to have antivirus software or virus scan software installed on the system (I am one of them) as an antivirus protection, while you still need to use one and a best one if possible. In this post I am reporting my review on some major online free virus scan there is. They all can work with other antivirus software running on the system.
BitDefender Online Scanner is a free virus scan on-demand which incorporates the award-winning BitDefender scanning engines. This free virus scan also tries to disinfect infected files if it finds one by default (you can change the option).
Drawbacks: By the time I write this, the page only works on IE (Internet Explorer) as there is an ActiveX extension that needs to be installed before the program can run. Loading the page with Firefox will result in a different page with no online-scanner button to be found. The update and virus signature download is about 40MB in size.
The Kaspersky free online virus scanner is a great way to find out if you have any viruses or spyware on your machine without having to install new software on your system.
Drawbacks: The free online virus scan will not remove the malware from your machine if it finds one nor will it try to clean infected files – installing the full product is required to do this. The update and virus signature download is about 55MB in size.
ActiveScan is an advanced online scanner based on Collective Intelligence (scanning in-the-cloud) that detects malware that traditional security solutions cannot detect. It has rather compact update and signature file download compared to the other two. It also provides you with a list of open vulnerabilities your system still have, and disinfection for infected files that only requires you to register.
Drawbacks: Probably the thinner size of signature database is the only drawback I can think of from this online scan service. Even so, the Collective Intelligence it claims to be non-traditional is yet to be proven.
Review
What I like from Panda Security’s ActiveScan that the others don’t have is the Vulnerability List it provides us with. This way, we can patch our system effectively while not overdoing it. That’s why I made a step-by-step video on how to patch our system using Panda Security ActiveScan online scan. I embed the video here so you can see what I mean. And when you do, notice how efficiently and effectively we can apply each security patch.
