Didier Stevens from Helsinki ran his advertising campaign on Google’s Adword for half of the year. This resulted in 409 clicks on the ad that said: “Is your PC virus-free? Get it infected here!” There is no misspelling or any typos there, just an ad plainly saying that it is a virus that you click to infect your computer.

How can there still be people clicking that ad?

Mikko Hypponen who conducted the research at data security firm F-Secure, suggests, that people might do the ad clicking for several reasons. People could have mistakenly clicked the button, sometimes curiosity overcomes prudence, and some other people must have misunderstood the meaning.

I think there is one more reason that is not yet mentioned, that is, some people do look for virus samples, for whatever reason we don’t know. I come to think about it because I happened to have searched for various virus samples all over the internet for Security System and Antivirus Protection test. And to be honest, it is a rather difficult quest.

If We Know What We’re Doing, We’ll Get Along Just Fine.

Of course Stevens did not do the experiment with actual virus. But he managed to proof that the advertising system can even be a good measure to spread malicious software. That’s why I think we should all continuously gain our knowledge about computer security to really fight and overcome malicious threats. I have proven that in my computer systems.
